Like many things between them, Kit had only ever needed to mention cows all of one single time to have Theo jotting it down in private, to have him planning a birthday escape months and months in advance. Theo knows it's been a little cruel to tease it, to make Kit wait and be patient before the surprise could be put into action. But it's worth it in the end, Theo knows that too. He's thrumming with excitement in the weeks leading up to it, and he's left very specific instructions for if, by pure chance, Peter takes over at the wrong time. By Theo's meticulous calculations it's unlikely, but he's prone to being over-prepared, and he isn't about to stop now.
All he knows is that he wants Kit to be spoiled. He knows this is the longest relationship Kit has ever been in, and he imagines it's the only one to have reached this point — the birthdays, the celebrations. He imagines, too, that it's maybe one of the few times Kit has been with someone who has wanted to spoil him, at least in a way that doesn't end in an arrest.
So Theo refuses to budge about the whys and the wheres and the whats. He's confident that Kit won't be disappointed, even if Theo is a worrier, even if while he drives them down the coast and into rolling green hills and cliffs he hopes this ends in the excitement he's expecting.
When they roll up and Kit asks, "Wait, it's not a sex thing?" Theo is two seconds away from punching him (gently) in the shoulder, a moment away from opening his mouth to apologize, but there's no need. Kit's out of the car and gone already, racing to the field where there are cows waiting to cuddle, and other farm animals in the sanctuary that are curious about newcomers.
Theo waits at the car for a moment longer (and he needs to adjust his hat, anyway, thanks to the furry ears stuck underneath it). He's got his camera to capture the moment, to record it for his own purposes, to add it to his immense, growing gallery of all things Kit — but for now he just watches, content, happy, gazing at Kit in the sun, Kit kissing a cow on the mouth, Kit turning around to beam at him with that smile. Theo wonders if this is more of a gift for himself, to see Kit so happy. Who could blame him?
